Biography
Kai Manning is a qualified Registered Nursing Associate who has worked in High Secure Psychiatric services since 2020 across the East Midlands and Southwest of the country. His background is in acute, ICU and community mental health and autism services, with a particular interest and current placement in forensic and secure units. He is also a proud Transgender man with a keen interest in transgender health issues and understanding and raising awareness about the staggering health inequalities for this community and how we can combat this.

    Transgender care in UK inpatient mental health settings: policy, practice and clinical implications

    Transgender individuals admitted to inpatient mental health settings in the UK often experience significant challenges related to policy inconsistency, limited staff training and uncertainty surrounding gender-inclusive care. Drawing on published literature, policy analysis, and the author's professional and lived experience, this article examines the experiences of transgender patients across NHS inpatient services, including high secure psychiatric hospitals. While some NHS trusts have developed inclusive policies that support ward placement aligned with gender identity and person-centred care, practice remains variable because of the absence of comprehensive national guidance. The article argues for clearer national policy, enhanced staff education, and trans-aware clinical frameworks to promote equitable, safe and dignified care for transgender people within inpatient mental health services.

    This series of articles will examine the issues of suicide, self-harm and the health disparities that disproportionately affect the trans population. It will also discuss how these issues are routinely under-addressed, under-researched, and portrayed negatively within the government, media and the NHS. This article, the first in the series, will provide a background of the risk factors, statistics relating to self-harm in the trans community, and a brief history of discrimination experienced by its members.
