Abstract
Project Aim: Increase Non-Medical Prescriber (NMP) allocations from 6% in May 2024 to 20% by December 2024.
Non-Medical Prescribers (NMPs) were not utilised efficiently across localities, causing inequitable access for patients. This project aimed to increase patient access to NMPs which would in turn increase the capacity for medical professionals to manage complex and urgent cases, enhancing overall patient care. Transitioning staff from Band 6 to Band 7 was necessary to enable them to take on more senior roles, facilitating dedicated clinics throughout Coventry and Warwickshire. Data was analysed prior to and following the implementation of NMP clinics which are now accessible to all patients.

Project Impact: We achieved an increase in referrals to NMPs from 7% to 34% in Warwickshire and 6% to 21% in Coventry & Rugby. The introduction of NMP clinics has provided patients with more accessible and flexible care options. This not only helped reduce the sole dependency on medics but also demonstrated a more diversified approach to patient appointments and their care. The percentages of medications started by medics and NMPs are similar in Warwickshire, showing that NMP’s are effectively taking on responsibilities that have been medic led historically. A positive shift towards a holistic approach has been identified with NMP’s prescribing less, as shown in audit data.
