Abstract
Aim: To Reduce the Number of AWOLs (Failure to Returns and Absconsions) in the Male Pathway.
During the course of the project, the way AWOL has been reported and categorised has changed. For the purpose of the project and continuity of data, we have continued to categorise AWOL as absconded and failure to return. Throughout the project there has been no statistical change to the overall number of AWOLs being reported. Prior to November 2023, the main reason for a person going AWOL was as a result of absconding. There have been a number of change ideas implemented but they have had little impact on the numbers of patients going AWOL. Since the introduction of “no group escort”, both wards show that there was a reduction in absconsions. However, at the same time the number of failure to returns has increased with
the overall number of AWOLs remaining unchanged on Hearsall and increasing on Beechwood. The biggest proportion of failure to returns were as a result of extended period of time off the ward e.g. not returning from day leave. Due to the low average number of AWOLs being reported, it was difficult to set a realistic & achievable target.

Project Impact:
Hearsal AWOL did not reduce
Beechwoods AWOL increased.
