Abstract
This volume has brought together researchers from a variety of disciplines within the behavioral sciences in an attempt to address some key issues concerning personality, personality disorder and violence. We have focused on those traits and disorders that are thought to be linked to an increased likelihood of violence, since the latter is dearly not an inevitable consequence of the former. Contributors have focused on impulsiveness, the Big Five personality dimensions, narcissism, psychopathy and antisocial personality disorder. Of special interest here is the question of how these traits and disorders increase the likelihood that violence will occur. Contributors have described the developmental route through which early antecedents translate across the lifespan into adult personality disorders with an associated elevated risk of violence. Some of the specific mechanisms that might elevate risk of violence have also been proposed and their empirical investigation described. These neurophysiological, cognitive, affective and social mechanisms are surely the foundation on which effective treatments can be developed. In this concluding chapter, we will identify some key themes that have emerged in this book. Our aims are twofold: first, to identify potentially fruitful new areas of research, and second to draw out implications for up-to-date evidence-based clinical practice.
