Omnipod 5: an audit of the first three months of real-world data in an adult insulin pump service

Abstract
Aims: Omnipod 5 launched in the UK on 21st June 2023. It is the first patch insulin pump to deliver insulin in a hybrid closed loop. In our pump service, we have 26 patients who have been on Omnipod 5 in a hybrid closed loop with Dexcom G6 for 3 months. This abstract shows our results and experiences from the first 26 patients to use this new and exciting technology.
Method: All patients who had funding for Omnipod insulin pump (Dash or Eros) who qualified for an Omnipod promise upgrade were started on an Omnipod 5 in July/August 2023. All patients have been requested to have an HbA1c blood test before the Omnipod 5 start, and at 3 months post Omnipod 5 start. Data has also been used from Glooko, as this data set is complete.
Results: In the first 3 months of Omnipod 5 use in an insulin pump user population, glycaemic control has improved on average by 7.4mmol mol-1. Hypoglycaemic events have reduced to less than 1% or time in range. All patients switched to Omnipod 5 have the same or more time in target range (3.9-10mmol mol-1), with the best change in time in target range a 46% increase (28% to 74% time in target). 25 of 26 patients have less time in the hypoglycaemia range, with average time in hypoglycaemic range now less than 1% (1.95% reduced to 0.96%).
Summary: Omnipod 5 shows improvement in HbA1c and hypoglycaemia. Patients report sleeping better, worrying less and wanting to improve their glycaemic control further.
