QI 1244 Implementing Visual Aids and Regular Huddles to Increase Staff Engagement with Improvement

Abstract
Aim: To implement improvement boards and regular huddles in one LD&A unit, to enhance staff engagement and ownership of improvement activities, by July 2024. Data showed that the Learning Disabilities and Autism (LD&A) directorate had the lowest engagement with improvement activity, with 16 projects initiated between January 2020 and February 2023; 11 of these projects had been abandoned due to a lack of engagement, with only one project completed. The project also supported the need to improve services at the forensic inpatient facility at Brooklands Hospital, following a CQC rating of 'requires improvement' in March 2023. A literature review, conducted by the Project Lead supported the theory that visual aids and huddles can be effective when attempting to empower, motivate and increase engagement among staff. The project initially aimed to focus in one unit, and quickly grew to all seven units on site, and one LD&A Respite Service in Nuneaton. Project Impact: Overall a 250% increase in engagement with QI activity was achieved, and the project contributed to a new CQC rating of 'Good'! Across all units, 12 Improvement projects were initiated, 11 'Quick Wins' were achieved, there were 15 other areas for improvement identified, 66 members of staff gained a basic understanding of QI methodology and 6 members of staff enrolled on CWPTs QSIR-V training to gain further improvement skills.
