Patient perspectives of a physiotherapy led musculoskeletal community event : a mixed methods service evaluation

Abstract
Introduction: Musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders are an increasing burden on healthcare systems, prompting innovative models of care to improve access and outcomes. An emerging integrated model of care, musculoskeletal community event (MSK-CE), utilises multiprofessional and organisational input to provide a holistic approach in a community-based setting. However, patient perspectives remain largely unexplored.
Objectives: To investigate patient perspectives following the MSK-CE on key categories of satisfaction, confidence and comparison to usual care.
Methods: Patients on a National Health Service trust physiotherapy waiting list were invited to an MSK-CE. Attendees (n=253) were invited to complete a post-event anonymous survey comprising 7 multiple choice and Likert scale questions. A pragmatic mixed methods approach using quantitative frequency-based descriptive statistics with qualitative responses subcategorised around key categories of satisfaction, confidence and comparison to usual care and coded positive or negative. Quotations included to support findings.
Results: There were 71 respondents. Satisfaction with the MSK-CE was positive (Likert scale 1-10, 80% responded 7-10), with “advice and guidance” and “care provision” subcategories informed by quotations. Confidence to self-manage their condition generally improved (Likert scale 1-10, 64% responded 7-10), with quotations informing subcategories “promotion of self-management” and “reassurance”. When comparing this MSK-CE to routine physiotherapy care, responses were comparably distributed between “better” (n=25/71), “same” (n=19/71) and “unknown” (n=23/71). Respondents provided mixed feedback on subcategories of “format” and “organisation”.
Conclusions: Respondents were generally satisfied and reported improved confidence in self-managing their conditions following the event. Responses to comparison to routine care were evenly distributed between better, same and unknown.
