QI 1311 Improving Knowledge, Attitude and Perception of ECT Amongst CWPT Healthcare Workers
Abstract
Aim: To identify the perceptions, attitudes, and bias towards Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) as a treatment amongst CWPT ward staff with a view to improving knowledge, perceptions & attitudes.
There appears to be a lot of misconceptions about ECT some of which are unfortunately thought to be significantly contributed to by health care professionals involved in caring for the patients. Due to continuing lack of access to proper information and guidance about the procedure and its benefits, the issue continues to be propagated even within psychiatric services. This has resulted in ECT being viewed as a form of inhumane treatment, with its therapeutic effects being overlooked, more focus on some side effects which may well be reversible and an even greater attention to rarer adverse effects.
