Facing the future: re-building our intensive care team

Abstract
The Quality improvement Project delivered is called: ‘Facing the Future: Re-building our Intensive Care Team’. Nationally experienced staff are leaving the speciality due to moral injury caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Research suggests that lasting implications on mental health such as: debilitating anxiety, Post-traumatic stress disorder, widespread feelings of anger and guilt; is resulting in 39% of staff stating their intention to leave intensive care and potentially nursing. UHB Heartlands and Good Hope Critical Care units applied for and won a ‘Well-Being Award’ from the BACCN, its premise, to hold off-site team building days for the whole Team across 11 dates from April – June. Our aim was for attendees to connect on a personal level (through Restorative Clinical Supervision) and professional level; with their Band 7 and mentor team, enabling each member of the team to become involved in quality improvement. Additionally, there was a ‘Year in Review’, Patient Feedback and a Well-Being information session, which collectively meets all the elements of the Professional Nurse Advocate model: Advocating for Education and Quality Improvement (A-Equip). On arrival staff completed an anonymous questionnaire to gauge expectations and mood. A further questionnaire was completed at the end of the day to assess whether the day had been of benefit. Themes have been fed back to unit management, to promote ideas, and look at the long-term well-being of staff going forwards. This project provided an opportunity for team collaboration putting staff views at the heart of the day.
