Abstract
The problem or issue we were looking to fix and why it’s important:
To improve the care of patients who have an inevitable death whilst admitted at UHB, ensuring timely CPR decisions, reducing unnecessary/futile interventions and prioritising a holistic approach
UHB Patient Safety Investigation Response Group (PSIRG) identified that patients have been resuscitated against agreed patient plans and wishes
UHB Trust has higher than the national average rate for cardiac arrests however most deaths in hospital are ‘ predictable’ National Cardiac Arrest Audit (NCAA 2024)
UHB 33% of patients that survive a cardiac arrest have a DNACPR/ CPR not recommended decision put in place at the time of the event after Return of Spontaneous Circulation (ROSC)
