Reducing the effects of immobility during hospital admissions
Abstract
Loss of function, mobility and independence are common problems for older patients during and after a hospital stay. Two initiatives implemented on an acute trauma orthopaedic ward in Nottingham sought to increase patient involvement with their care in an attempt to reduce deconditioning and improve health outcomes and wellbeing. Ward staff adopted an innovative model of patient supervision and encouraged patients to get out of bed, mobile and active as part of the #EndPJparalysis campaign. This article describes the initiatives, their rationale and outcomes, which included a 37.5% reduction in falls and an 55.6% reduction in pressure ulcers.
