The management of difficult clients
Evershed, Sue
Evershed, Sue
Abstract
This chapter aims to provide an overview of issues involved in working with difficult clients and some general strategies for managing and treating such individuals within a therapeutic framework. A manual of treatment interventions is not being offered. This area is so broad and diverse that it is not possible to be specific within the constraints of this chapter. The literature in this area is sparse. Most authors prefer to publish accounts of therapeutic success rather than failure. By definition, these clients demonstrate slow therapeutic progress and present threats and problems for clinicians and managers alike. However, it is possible to draw upon clinical experience, therapeutic approaches and empirical research that offer general guidance as how best to deal with difficult clients.
