Ready or not, they are coming: Dangerous and severe personality disorder and treatment engagement

Howells, Kevin
Tennant, Allison
Abstract
Previous work on readiness for treatment has largely focused on general offenders or on specific problem areas, such as substance abuse and anger regulation. It is proposed that offenders with accompanying mental disorders are a group for whom treatment engagement is likely to be particularly challenging. Readiness issues arising in treating patients admitted to services for Dangerous and Severe Personality Disorders (DSPD) are discussed and analysed. The Multifactor Offender Readiness Model (MORM) can usefully be applied to this particular population and the model suggests strategies both for assessment of readiness and for planning interventions to enhance engagement in treatment. Readiness needs to be addressed at the level of internal patient characteristics, the therapeutic programme delivered and the overall institutional and organisational setting.
