Trauma-informed care and 'good lives' in confinement: Acknowledging and offsetting adverse impacts of chronic trauma and loss of liberty
Abstract
This chapter will highlight toxic reactions to confinement in people with trauma-related problems and how the effects of adverse experiences can be played out in custodial settings. It will also highlight the importance of working with the social milieu and staff responses to trauma-related presentations in order to offset cycles of misunderstanding, reactions and counter-reactions that render the setting unsafe and re-traumatizing for residents.
