Revisiting psychosis: A two-day workshop

Houghton, Philip
Abstract
"Challenging attitudes towards psychosis has been one of the greatest achievements of the British Psychological Society over the past 10 years" (Ann Cooke, personal communication). Central to this achievement has been an innovative report that challenges the dominance of a narrow view of psychotic experiences as primarily a symptom of an illness that is treated by medication. Understanding mental illness: recent advances in understanding mental illness and psychotic experiences (BPS, 2000) encourages understandings of psychosis and psychotic experiences that are informed by social and psychological factors, and by the views of those who experience psychosis. Yet any report is only as influential as the process through which its message is disseminated. Mindful of this fact, the authors of the report recognized a "need for a national program of training for mental health workers to enable them to make use of the ideas and information in the report" (Cooke, 2000, p. 7). This hope became a reality in 2001 when the UK Department of Health funded the development of a number of learning materials, one of which was a training manual for a two-day workshop, "Psychosis Revisited" (Bassett et al., 2003). This chapter explores the uplifting experience of delivering this workshop over the past few years, with particular emphasis on the value of the relationships formed with service user colleagues.
