Behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia

Dening, Tom
Abstract
BPSD are present in 80% of people with dementia, and are also seen in the older population without dementia. They include apathy, depressive symptoms, anxiety, irritability, agitation, psychotic symptoms, sleep problems, wandering, and elation. BPSD impact upon quality of life of older people and their carers, and influence prescribing and use of services. BPSD are sometimes also referred to as neuropsychiatric symptoms of dementia. This seems to be interchangeable so this chapter will refer mainly to BPSD. This chapter discusses the history and conceptual basis of BPSD; their clinical features and associated factors; and their course and outcome.
