Abstract
Reviews the book, Beyond Madness: Psychosocial Intervention in Psychosis by Joseph H. Berke, Margeret Fagan, George Mak-Pearce and Stella Pierides-Muller (2002). This is the seventh volume in the "therapeutic communities" series and a highly informative and reassuring read for anyone interested in psychodynamic applications, or working with individuals with a mental illness. The book is split into four sections. The first section centres on the broad historical and theoretical perspectives. The second section aims to capture the day-to-day running of the Centre from its structure and organisation to its routine. The third section consists of narratives, which capture the story of living the Arbours' experience. The final section focuses more on the concepts of power, money and authority. The book is respectful in its critique of the psychiatric approach. Nevertheless some would place this in the category of anti-psychiatric, anti-asylum literature.
